In 1325 the Mexicas founded Tenochtitlan and constructed a small temple, which would undergo seven reconstructions and eleven enlargements in later years. The final structure was destroyed by the Spaniards during the Conquest. The Great Temple was designed with a twin stairway leading to two shrines on top of a pyramid type structure. One was dedicated to the war god, Huitzilopochtli and the other to the water god, Tláloc, both of whom were fundamental to the Mexica economy and religion.
